70 tails, 70 tales, 70 artists, 10 weeks, 1 city, 1 mission

A truly immersive experience celebrating Aotearoa, art, and marine conservation comes to Auckland. Whale Tales is a public art trail exploring the City of Sails, and you’re invited!

A trail of unique and stunning whale tail sculptures, designed by artists and children, sponsored by businesses and organisations, will animate the Tamaki Makaurau. Whale Tales will provide residents and visitors with a fresh opportunity to explore and delight in all that makes Auckland city unique, and to discover the tales of its history, people and places. The legacy of Whale Tales will continue long after the fun of the trail has ended, with the sculptures being auctioned to raise significant funds for the vital work WWF-New Zealand does to look after our oceans and conserve marine life here in Aotearoa, particularly in and around the Hauraki Gulf. There are lots of ways to get involved and be part of this special project.

Artists

Artists, both well-known and undiscovered, are invited to submit designs to decorate the whale tail sculptures.

We are seeking a range of designs and art forms to bring the whale tails to life, giving them each a unique character and personality. Sponsors will each select their preferred design, which will then be translated onto a blank tail by the commissioned artist.

This is your opportunity to unleash your creativity, skills and innovation on the biggest canvas in town!

Contact Whale Tales Art Coordinator Lucy Moore by email at lmoore@wwf.org.nz with any questions or ideas related to the art programme.
